13TH - 19TH CENTURIES
BACK STORY
Approach

Since the area of design and architecture is highly visual, I wanted to create a website that was informative with interesting typography making it easy to follow, and plenty of images of the topics discussed. The web format allows for virtual tours and other multimedia ways to experience historic library spaces, when available. The only big challenge was finding quality images of certain libraries or architectural details.
Research

There are many amazing book resources that have stunning full color images and great information, but these texts aren't always readily or freely available to the public.

As technology progresses, so does the ability to experience information in new ways. Institutions may provide virtual tours of their spaces, but there isn't a resource I know of that bring all of that information together. Especially in the time of coronavirus pandemic (as of this writing on April 29, 2020), it is important to gather virtual experiences for those who would like to explore the world for themselves from the comfort of their web browser.
Topic Selection

I really enjoyed researching library design for Actio 5. It was fascinating to learn how perspective was used to trick the eye--trompe l'oeil.
I wanted to dig deeper into the design, architecture, and materials used in different eras, especially the 17th & 18th centuries. The Baroque and Rococo styles in the 18th century were especially ornate and interesting.
