SWITCH TO PAPER BOOKS

Paper books were produced using new printing presses. They were not as cumbersome as parchment books.

Paper books could be shelved vertically and new furnishings were needed to accomodate more books.

Earliest form: freestanding furniture that stood against a wall wrapped around the perimeter

Evolved to built-in structures that covered the entire wall surface & appeared as part of the wall
